Leafkicker Coffee Alcohol Free Beer

It’s the time of year we start getting our cosy on. Long Autumn walks, afternoon meet-ups and time spent planning our holiday calendars. Always on the lookout for something tasty to accompany the moment, capture the mood and complement the season, we teamed up with Big Drop Brewing Co to create a first of its kind, deliciously fresh and bright coffee-infused, alcohol-free amber ale, Leafkicker. Just in time to see us through the holiday season, we can’t wait for you to taste it!

Big Drop Brewing Co x Square Mile Collaboration

Big Drop enthusiasts, we were thrilled for the opportunity to collaborate on a project. Brewing beer to 0.5% ABV rather than de-alcoholising beer, Big Drop achieves tasty alcohol-free craft beers that are big on flavour and personality through formulating and limiting the reaction between the yeast and fermentable sugars. A one-off and limited-run beer, with the coming together of Red Brick and Citra hops, Leafkicker celebrates the best of both brands.

To launch Leafckicker and announce the collaboration, beer expert and author Melissa Cole moderated an informal panel at Prufrock Coffee between Big Drop’s Johnny Clayton and our head of coffee Tom Flawith. Watch the video below to find out more.

From Johnny Clayton:

“I was excited to blend two of my favourite things and knew it would be a challenge to get the balance just right. I had the concept of autumn in my head and was driven by the colours and smells which it evokes in me. I wanted to make something comforting, exciting and within really melded the flavours together.

Citra is one of my favourite hops. It’s considered a bit of a classic these days and somewhat overshadowed by newer varieties that have come out as brewers search for the ultimate hazy neipa. In terms of flavour, I thought by combining the mouthwatering juicy acidic qualities of Red Brick and tropical earthiness of this fantastic hop we’d have a real winner

The coffee went in at a very late stage in the hot side of the process. Whilst the beer was being chilled and sent to the fermenter, we added the coffee when the kettle was about half full. This was in order to ensure that we didn’t over-extract and get that in your face bitterness. I wanted to get the lighter fruity, woody notes to come out.

The best time to enjoy it? I’d probably pop one in the fridge just before taking the dog out for a long autumnal walk for a real special treat to look forward to once I got home”
